The Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator), which is not hunted, is more rare than the tundra swan. The male swan is referred to as a cob, and the female is a pen. Swans migrate up to 4,000 miles at altitudes from 2,000 to 4,000 feet. The swan is the largest of the hunted waterfowl, however, hunting is permitted in only a few states. When feeding in iron rich areas, the swan's head and neck feathers take on a reddish-brown hue.
